We are looking for:

An Operations Manager at the Baltimore, MD location to lead and manage the operations function at the site focusing on reliably, predictably, and efficiently producing and shipping quality products in a timely manner  AND on achieving HSSE Excellence.  You will ensure the efficient utilization of departmental resources to continually improve operations, instill Operating Discipline, optimize unit operating costs, implement cost reduction measures (both fixed and variable), enforce and comply with HSSE (Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental) standards as set forth under OSHA and Solvay. You will be an agent of change instilling discipline, efficiency and accountability to the operations workforce in the overall execution of day to day activities.  You will drive execution of the operations to achieve targeted performance levels as measured by key Manufacturing Excellence and other internal performance indicators.

  • Manufacture and ship quality products on time and in a reliably and predictable manner.
  • Manage departmental costs and support other site departments to achieve their respective budgets. 
  • Continually increase the efficiency and overall output of the workforce and reduce unit production costs.
  • Lead, manage, coach, and develop Operations supervisory and support personnel.
  • Conduct daily informal inspections on the shop floor and provide feedback to supervision on observations and corrective actions.
  • Drive root cause identification/failure analysis and corrective actions for HSSE and operations related failures.
  • Provide the leadership and establish or refine systems or approaches to instill Operating Discipline in those that perform work.
  • Develop, implement and continually improve operational management systems.
  • Develop, report, and monitor key performance indicators for operations
  • Introduce the proactive approach to the operations workforce to prevent problems
  • Support the plant’s quality management systems and its compliance with pertinent quality standards.

Additional HSSE Responsibilities:

  • Fully participate in plant HSSE initiatives including performing periodic audits and housekeeping inspections.
  • Instill discipline and accountability in the execution of all procedures.
  • Enforce Solvay Life Savings Rules and all other site safety rules and procedures within the operations departments, other plant personnel, as well as contractors that are working onsite.  Lead by example.
  •  Conduct routine informal inspections on the shop floor and provide feedback to supervision on observations and corrective actions.
  • Assure appropriate HSSE training is provided to all direct and indirect reports.
  •  Assure all safety inspections and audits are performed and documented.
  • Assure Process Safety process and program, including integrity aspects, are maintained and adhered to.
  • Conduct periodic inspections to assure compliance to existing safety rules and procedures and to assess the effectiveness and need for other risk reduction activities within the departments.
  • Participate in regulatory and internal audits as needed.
  • Represent Solvay through daily actions that reinforce the corporate values demonstrating personal commitment to a safe, healthy and environmentally sound workplace for employees.
  • Conduct or direct the completion of investigations of incidents or near misses, as appropriate, and insure corrective actions are identified, assigned, and completed.

You will bring:

  • Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering or similar Engineering discipline.
  • 10 or more years working in a chemical process production plant with 3 or more years of operational (production) supervisory or line management experience in a union environment. 
  • Excellent leadership and organizational skills
  • Ability to manage, motivate, coach, and develop personnel
  • Ability to set aggressive objectives, deliver results, and facilitate cooperation between departments. 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Good computer skills with working knowledge of MS Office and a general understanding of databases.
  • Excellent understanding of OSHA standards relating to life critical activities (Solvay Life Saving Rules)
  • Working understanding of OSHA personnel and process safety standards
  • General awareness of environmental regulations and the ability to understand and manage operational compliance of the site’s air, waste, wastewater, and storm water permits.
  • Ability to conduct investigations, develop root causes, and to develop/implement corrective actions, either directly or through subordinates.
  • Ability to manage in a union environment
  • Change management and team building skills.
  • Familiarity with batch and continuous processing a plus
  • Knowledge of 6 Sigma, Lean Manufacturing concepts, and/or SAP is a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to interface with the appropriate external personnel and serve as a backup to the Plant Manager in both the internal and external affairs.

 

 

You will get:

  • Competitive salary and benefits package.
  • The U.S. base salary range reasonably expected to be paid for this position is $134,000 to $149,000 per year. Since actual compensation packages are based on a variety of factors unique to each candidate we may ultimately pay more or less than the posted base salary range. Total compensation for this role also includes bonus and/or other incentives.
